Conference Overview

State policymakers and stakeholders from across Ohio’s justice system gathered on July 26, 2010 to discuss a new report on the cost-effectiveness of the state’s criminal justice policies. The analysis for the report was conducted by the Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center, as part of the Justice Reinvestment Initiative. This initiative was the result of a 2008 request by state leaders to the CSG Justice Center, the Pew Center on the States, and the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance for help in developing a statewide policy framework that can reduce crime and enable more fiscally responsible uses of resources.

The conference took place on July 26, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (EST), at the Columbus Renaissance Hotel in Columbus, Ohio. It featured a bipartisan roster of speakers from the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, including “Justice Reinvestment Work Group” co-chairs State Sen. Bill Seitz (R-Green Township) and State Rep. Mike Moran (D-Hudson), presentations from three nationally recognized criminal justice experts, and two moderated panels of criminal justice stakeholders.

Report

The report is a product of Ohio’s “justice reinvestment” work to reduce corrections spending and reinvest in strategies that can increase public safety. It is based on an analysis of crime, arrests, sentencing, probation, prison growth, and post-release supervision trends. Download the summary presentation and the full report.
